Michael Cook, DC, Dipl. Ac (NCCAOM)
Dr. Michael Cook, DC, DIPAC is a board certified chiropractic physician and acupuncturist specializing in the conservative management of auto accident injuries, work injuries, back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, muscle injuries, arthritis and headaches.
Dr. Cook’s expertise allows some patients to avoid more invasive treatments, offers hope if conventional therapies are not effective, and can aid in recovery from surgery or other procedures. “It’s very gratifying to bring these treatments more into the mainstream, and to see the immediate pain relief they can provide,” he says.
Utilizing chiropractic care enables Dr. Cook to treat improper mechanical function of the spine while relieving pain and improving spinal integrity. He is also board certified in acupuncture by the NCCAOM. Acupuncture is a centuries old method of relieving pain and improving the body’s natural function. Dr. Cook is trained in the manual therapy art of Gua-Sha, a traditional Chinese therapy that is especially helpful with persistent soft tissue pain and medically unresponsive pain syndromes. The non-invasive technique involves scraping the skin to produce light bruising, aiming to improve circulation and reduce inflammation to promote healing. Dr. Cook also offers the K-Laser, a Class IV therapeutic laser, an advanced, fast-acting tool that painlessly delivers specific wavelengths of light to again stimulate the body’s natural healing ability. The laser has successfully eased many types of joint pain.
With his extensive training in chiropractic at Life University and acupuncture at National University, he provides pain treatment options that are non-invasive and utilized by many who have not responded to conventional pain management.
Dr. Cook knows firsthand what conservative treatments can accomplish: originally from Newport News and Ferguson High School, Dr. Cook was a record-setting member of the swimming team at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. After college, he suffered a spinal fracture while lifting weights. He found relief only after adding chiropractic care to his physical therapy regimen. Inspired, he changed his post graduate studies from an MBA to a chiropractic career, graduating as a Doctor of Chiropractic from Life University in 1991. He was awarded an academic and clinical skills scholarship and served as a clinical instructor in the outpatient clinic.
Dr. Cook was one of the first chiropractic physicians in Virginia to be trained in Manipulation Under Anesthesia, a medical and chiropractic combined procedure performed in a hospital setting. He offers non-surgical Disc Decompression therapy for degenerative and herniated Lumbar discs with the DRX 9000 medical device offering a well-documented treatment option for this common spinal condition.
